What is the project about
PayPal Here™ is a mobile payment solution that allows businesses to accept card payments (by Chip & PIN or contactless) on the go. It offers a handheld card reader that can be paired with a device via Bluetooth that will enable businesses (especially those that traditionally rely on cash such as tradesmen, market traders and taxi drivers) to increase their potential sales.
What problem we trying to solve
The US had developed firstly a SWIPE payment solution which could not be rolled out globally due to EU laws requiring both Chip and PIN to authenticate a transaction. At least 80% of the US solution had to be redesigned for EU audience due to the fast differences in user experience (journey and hardware).
How we did it (my contribution)
Designing for iPhone, Android and iPad.
I was part of a 3-man UX team based in London office, working alongside our US counterparts in Boston, USA. Working in an agile on a 2 week sprint cycle. As the UK team was leading the project, we had a daily standup at 3pm to discuss progress on designs. We were leading form a product point as the product differed from the US equivalent (which was swipe only technology).
As visual design lead for EMEA, I was responsible for the UK and European design output, using product lifecycle design-centred methodologies - working closely with the UX lead and Content Designer. We were also contributing to the evolution of global interaction and visual design patterns.
Contribution to the early design of the card reader leasing with manufacturer.
Measuring success
Made use of product discovery techniques - focus groups and guerilla testing.
Prototypes and user testing onsite.
Once the design offering was stable we partnered with several local shops on Richmond high street. Here we would spend time on site a few ours a week to monitor seller and customer interactions to see where the product could improve.

User testing and design iterations
During the final phases of product design we had several local businesses sign up to the Beta version. We tested this over 3 months, fine tuning the user experience.
